- 1). Open the design software on your computer. Examples of a suitable program could be Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop or Paint.
- 2). Choose the size of the image you want to create. A handbill is made to fit easily in the hand, so examples of sizes could be 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches or 6 by 9 inches.
- 3). Create a background with the artwork you would like to use. Choose a photograph from the play or use a solid color, such as black.
- 4). Create a text box at the top and include a quote raving about the play. Often you'll see phrases such as "Spectacular!" or "Best Show of the Year!" Use a font that will stand out against the background you chose. Make the font big enough to fill half of the page.
- 5). Create another text box and fill it with the title of the play. Move this text box three-quarters of the way to the bottom of the page, directly under the quote you added in step 4. Make the font a different color or style to stand out from the quote. Make this title a bigger size font from the quote.
- 6). Add play information in smaller print under the title in a new text box. Include dates, times and locations of performances, ticket prices and lead actors and actresses. This font should be small, but still legible to the unaided eye at an arm's length.
- 7). Play with the font styles and sizes now that all of the necessary information is on the page. You may opt to change up the background and location of the text boxes to fit your design.
- 8). Print the playbill using your home computer. You can print the handbill on basic computer paper or a thicker card stock.
