Odd Signs of Pregnancy

    Nosebleeds

    • Some women in early pregnancy have nosebleeds for the first time or the first time in a long time. Nosebleeds during pregnancy are caused by increased blood supply putting strain on the small blood vessels in the nose. If you experience a nosebleed, do not tilt your head back, as this can lead to nausea and vomiting. Pinch your nose and add an ice pack over the nose. If you experience a nosebleed that lasts longer than 20 minutes, contact your doctor. Nasal stuffiness also can go along with pregnancy. A saline nasal mist can be helpful if you are experiencing these symptoms.

    Constipation

    • Sluggish bowels can be an uncomfortable symptom of pregnancy. This is caused by the increased progesterone that accompanies pregnancy. If this is something you are experiencing, add fiber and increase your water intake to eliminate constipation. Even adding exercise can help get your bowel movements back to normal.

    Increased Gas

    • Increased gas is another unpleasant symptom of pregnancy. Increased gas is caused by the same thing that causes constipation--progesterone. Increased progesterone relaxes the smooth muscles of the body, which include muscles around the digestive track. To help alleviate this symptom, try reducing the foods that are known to cause gas, such as broccoli, asparagus, beans, cauliflower and cabbage. Eating smaller meals also can reduce the amount of gas produced.

    Insomnia

    • Some pregnant women experience insomnia, or the inability to fall or stay asleep. This can be related to worries about motherhood and/or the pregnancy. Adding exercise, removing caffeine and trying relaxation exercises can help ease this uncomfortable symptom.

    Vaginal Discharge

    • As a woman's pregnancy progresses, the amount of vaginal discharge she experiences is likely to increase because of an increase in hormones. Although this symptom can be inconvenient, it is important for your body because it removes bacteria from the vagina and cervix. Women can use panty liners to protect their clothing. Wearing a panty liner is a good idea because if the discharge's color or odor changes, you need to contact your doctor. Discharge that is thicker and is tinted with blood can signify the beginning of labor. Typically, this type of discharge comes from passing the mucus plug. An odor or change of color can also mean a vaginal infection.

    Nasal Stuffiness

    • Nasal stuffiness, called rhinitis of pregnancy, also can increase during a pregnancy. This can be caused by allergies or bacterial infections, but is typically caused by a preexisting condition such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps. A saline nasal mist can be helpful if you are experiencing these symptoms.
