- Ask about mattress removal at the store where you purchase your new mattress. Many stores offer this as a free service to customers; when they deliver your new mattress, they also remove the old one.
- A brand-new mattress and box spring can cost well over $1,000, which may be too expensive for many people. You may find that someone is interested in buying your slightly used mattress if it's in good condition. List it on a classifieds website, such as Craigslist, or in the classifieds section of your newspaper, or put it out during a garage sale.
- You may also want to reuse the mattress in your own home. Though you may no longer need it in your main bedroom, the mattress may still be perfectly suitable for a guest bedroom. You could also turn it into a large couch in your family room by placing it against a wall and adding several throw pillows along the back.
- Your local garbage collector probably won't take a mattress on any old day. However, there is usually several days per year when the city collects "big garbage," including furniture and mattresses. Alternatively, bring it to the dump yourself, but expect to pay a fee to dispose of it.
- In some areas, a recycling center can take a mattress and recycle all of the parts to it. Call your local center to ask about mattress recycling.
- One man's trash is another's treasure. If you're having a hard time getting rid of your mattress and it's still in usable shape, offer to give it away. You can post an ad for this on a local Freecycle board or perhaps just mention your offer to those you know who may want it.
