How to Cut Back an Abutilon

    • 1). Wait until the abutilon finishes flowering before cutting it back.

    • 2). Cut the abutilon back no more than 3 feet from the soil. Use shears or pruners, depending upon the size of the plant.

    • 3). Trim off thin, weak branches and those that grow horizontally.

    • 4). Rake the soil around the abutilon to remove pruning debris. Leaving it on the soil gives pests shelter and may become breeding grounds for insects or diseases.

    • 5). Fertilize the abutilon immediately after pruning. Use 3 lbs. of bonemeal per 50 square feet of soil. Use a spading fork to lightly scratch the bonemeal into the top layer of soil and water to a depth of 10 inches.
