- Give your child's teacher a gift certificate for two at a nice restaurant. Find out what town the teacher lives in and choose someplace in close proximity. If you know the teacher has a penchant for barbecue fusion -- great, otherwise, stick with a restaurant whose fare appeals to a broader audience. Call ahead for pricing to ensure that your certificate covers the full cost of a dinner for two.
- If you're unable to spend much money, a heartfelt creation from your child is always a touching gift. Many teachers collect student-made ornaments and other creations as a way to remember the special children they taught. Give your child's teacher a special project your child worked on and have him make a thank you card. Include a note of your own as well, expressing your gratitude.
- You can never go wrong with gift cards, whether they're to a local department store or a basic American Express or MasterCard gift card. Teachers often spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars of their own money on basic supplies like pencils and stickers for their classrooms. Not every teacher is forced to buy supplies on their own, but having another source of money, like a gift card, besides their own wallet is always a plus.
- Being a teacher can be rewarding, but stressful. According to the National Education Association, 30 percent of teachers would choose a gift certificate to a spa or for a massage as their first choice gift. Call the spa to verify pricing before purchasing the certificate, so your gift amount covers at least one or two treatments completely.
