Purpose

• Safari 3.0 is a general use web browser designed by Apple for its Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system as well as Windows. In addition to browsing websites and downloading files, Safari offers built-in bookmarking tools and an RSS feed reader. Apple developed Safari's underlying open-source architecture from a HTML rendering project called KHTML and renamed their variant WebKit. WebKit has been used as a basis for other web browsers, including Apple's iPhone Safari and Google's Chrome Browser.
  
  

History

• Apple announced Safari 3 as part of its Mac OS X 10.5 Jaguar operating system upgrade in 2007. The Internet browser first debuted in January 2003 for Mac OS X 10.2 Tiger and was subsequently updated to 2.0 in April 2005. Safari 3.0 was the first version of the browser that supported the Windows operating system. According to StatOwl, Safari is the third most used browser on the Internet, after Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Safari 3 was updated to 4.0 in June 2008.
  
  

Features

• In addition to Safari's speed, Apple advertised the browser's ability to protect users' privacy; tabbed browsing; and, on the Mac, the ability to save web pages for viewing on the Mac OS X Dashboard. With the release of Safari 3.1 in 2008, Apple touted Safari as being the first browser to support HTML 5 standards for video and audio tags, as well as CSS animations. Additionally, Safari 3 included Mac and Windows support for Apple's automatic Software Update program.
  
  

Requirements

• For the Macintosh, Safari 3 requires Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9 or later, at least 256 megabytes of RAM and is designed for any Intel-based Mac or one with a PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor (must include built-in FireWire). For Microsoft Windows, Safari 3 requires Windows XP or Windows Vista, at least 256 megabytes of RAM and a system with a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor or faster. Speed and usability depend greatly on system configuration and Internet connection.
  
  

Issues

• When Safari 3 was released, a number of security breaches quickly became apparent. Apple addressed the Microsoft Windows vulnerabilities by offering a security update four days later with Safari for Windows 3.0.1. The hack allowed offending websites access to a user's hard drive, where it could write and rewrite files. Later that month, Apple released an additional Safari for Windows security update, version 3.0.2, that supplied bug fixes and performance problems.
