For many people, a cruise holiday still conjures up the adage of a break for the 'newly wed, nearly dead and over fed' and although, it's true that cruise ships do offer non stop, twenty four hour a day eating options, a cruise holiday is also the ideal option for holiday makers wanting to improve their fitness levels.
The list of activities which guests can participate in onboard major cruise lines is almost limitless, especially on the new wave of 'mega' vessels - massive ships which offer such a wide range of jaw dropping and at times, unbelievable facilities.
There really is no excuse to return home several kilo's heavier than when you departed and, even if you do over eat, it should be easy to compensate by choosing some enjoyable exercise whilst you are away.
To start with, almost without exception, cruise ships have gymnasium facilities onboard.
Many of these gymnasiums at sea are so comprehensively equipped they rival facilities which can be found back home, and often have stunning ocean views, as many of them are situated right at the top of the ship and have panoramic glass windows enclosing them.
The cruise lines more often than not employ highly experienced personal trainers to offer advice and motivate, and even design guests their own personal training plan and coach (or coax!) you through it for a small additional fee.
They are also onboard to offer a varied selection of exercise classes in which passengers can participate - from spinning to boxing, and aerobics to yoga and pilates - there really is something for everyone.
For those that love the outdoors, how about a stroll around the top deck - taken at a bracing pace to burn off calories and increase aerobic fitness levels.
On most vessels there is a jogging track around the outside decks, and you couldn't ask for much better views to watch to break the monotony.
And if traditional exercise isn't your cup of tea, then you could always take part in some of the alternative daily entertainment options that are more active, such as dancing classes or poolside games.
Facilities, especially on 'mega' ships are often perfect for those seeking action and therefore increasing fitness levels.
The list is endless and includes facilities such as rock climbing walls, in line skating tracks, ice skating rinks, surf parks and zip wires (warning - not for the faint hearted!!!).
And keeping or getting fit is not only limited to onboard your cruise ship as all the major cruise lines also offer active shore excursions in many ports of call which you should check out when you book.
These include such a massive selection it would be impossible to list them all, but how about a spot of kayaking, horse riding, hiking or glacier trekking.
And finally, you can gorge yourself healthy - with cruise lines offering a fabulous selection of healthy options, both in the main dining rooms, speciality restaurants and buffets, they have indicators on their menus as to which options are the most healthy and staff will also to go out of their way to accommodate any requests guests may have.
With leisure time on your side whilst on a cruise holiday, there really is no excuse, the facilities and food are all laid on for you - just add energy and enjoy!
