The Best Air Purifiers for Cigarette Smoke

    Honeywell 50250

    • If you don't suffer from severe allergies or asthma, but would like to have cleaner air in a home you share with a smoker, the mid-range Honeywell 50250 is the best choice, according to the Galt Home Buying Guide. Available as of early 2011 for $150, the Galt Guide states that this high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter traps 99 percent of all particles. This will remove almost all parts of cigarette smoke from the air. Some gaseous elements will be left behind, but the smell will be gone and the smoke won't leave a film on your walls or ceiling.

    IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA

    • The top-rated air purifier on the Air Purifier Power website is the IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA because of its ability to clean indoor air more thoroughly than other models. People with severe breathing issues who need the cleanest air possible should find that this purifier is capable of producing air with zero particles left in it, based on multiple expert tests conducted by Consumer's Digest, Newsweek and other testers. A prefilter and HEPA media filter trap large and fine particles, but the Plus model also contains an odor and chemical trapping filter that captures the gaseous elements of cigarette smoke. As of 2011 it retails for around $900.

    Austin Air HealthMate

    • The Austin Air HealthMate provides better air filtration than smaller models but doesn't have the high price tag of the top of the line purifiers. It can't capture some of the smallest particles that make up chemical fumes, reports Consumer Search, but its HEPA and carbon filtration pack trap all of the elements of cigarette smoke. Unlike models that require monthly filter replacements, the HealthMate runs for three to five years without a new filter. It is available for $450 as of 2011.

    Rabbit Air BioGS

    • Lower-end air purifiers like the Honeywell 50250 are a good choice for cigarette odor control in small rooms, but if your living room is around 600 square feet, you may need the Rabbit Air BioGS. Designed for larger rooms, the Galt Home Buying Guide website notes that this popular model can handle large spaces and features washable filters. The HEPA filter traps 99 percent of smoke particles, so allergy sufferers who are reacting to the gases in cigarette smoke may not find it helpful. As of 2011 this model retails for $330.
