- 1). Determine the right pump for your pool. An improperly sized pump running too frequently can cause unnecessarily high power expenses. Incorrect usage and mixture of cleaning chemicals can also make the pool not just costly but unsafe as well.
- 2). Clean your pool regularly; if possible, try to clean it yourself, as it will not take much time to do in most cases. You can get automatic cleaners for a few hundred dollars, or clean it manually for much less (but with a time cost) -- both of which are cheaper than hiring a pool cleaner for $100 to $200 per month.
- 3). Buy your supplies, if possible, at times of low demand (such as winter) when prices will probably be lower. Also, buy in bulk -- you may receive shipping discounts for orders placed online and for larger orders.
- 4). Research and buy a fitted swimming pool cover that can reduce the amount of water that evaporates, and help the pool retain heat better. The energy savings from this measure will be realized with a very short payback, yet the right cover can last several years.
