Puffiness of the eye happens when the layer of elastic tissue under the eyes becomes thin as we age and then the fat is pushed forward to form the bags under the eyes.
All tissues including muscles and ligaments lose their elasticity over time.
In order to slow down the process, many look for creams and lotions to help tone the skin and reduce the effects of sunlight and air on the tissues.
Others opt for a blepharoplasty which is a surgical procedure that will work for 3 to 5 years, after which age will cause the skin to sag again.
These are expensive remedies for those who have the money for the operation or for buying expensive eye creams over and over again.
However, there are a few home remedies that really work to cure those sagging eye bags.
If you drink tea, don't throw away those used tea bags because they could come in handy for those pesky bags under your eyes.
When you feel that your eyes need a break, take out those tea bags and warm them in a hot glass of water.
When they are warm enough, place them over your eyes as you take a nap.
When you wake up, the only bags you should see are the tea bags.
Surprisingly, this is not just an old lady's tale.
Tea actually contains ingredients that have been scientifically proven to work.
Anti-irritants in herbal tea help reduce the swelling while the caffeinated teas contain caffeine which constricts the blood vessels and reduces swelling.
These ingredients work even when the tea is ice cold.
If you can't find tea, then you can use the teaspoons.
They work really well when they are placed in the fridge for a few minutes until cold to the touch.
Due to the fact that these spoons lose heat quickly, you will need to put 4 or 6 of these teaspoons in the refrigerator.
When the teaspoons are cold, take two of them, close your eyes, lay back, and press the back of each spoon on each eye.
As the spoons lose their coldness, replace them with the others from the fridge.
Continue changing the spoons until the eye bags begin to deflate.
Another well-known remedy is the cucumber remedy.
Although we usually find this hilarious in comedy productions, the cucumber actually has astringent properties that could constrict blood vessels.
Cool and soothing to the touch, cucumbers work as well as the teaspoons in solving this problem.
To do this, you have to place a slice of cucumber over each closed eye.
Lie back for five or ten minutes and let the cucumbers work their magic.
If you don't have a cucumber, then a potato will do the trick just as well.
The lowly potato has medicinal properties and has been used in Europe for centuries to ease joint pains, inflammation and headaches.
Potato starch will work to ease those puffy eyes.
You will have to make a poultice out of the potato by grating it finely, then placing the grated potato in a clean cloth.
Place the poultice over your eyes for 15 minutes and wait for it to clear those swollen eyes.
You can even use egg whites to cure those eyes.
Simply whip up 1 or 2 egg whites until it becomes stiff.
Apply the whipped egg white to your eye bags with a soft cloth.
The egg white work to tighten the skin and remove those irritating eye bags.
Water works in two ways: when in a crunch for time, splashing ice cold water on your face will reduce the swelling just as well as the cold teaspoons; and drinking several 8-ounce glasses of water throughout the day every day will reduce eye puffiness in the morning.
By re-hydrating yourself frequently, your body won't need to store a lot of water and make you bulge in the wrong places.
These are simple, inexpensive remedies, so rather than cough up $50 to $70 for an expensive eye cream, lie back relax, take your pick of remedies and have an ice cream instead.
