- Fingernail polish remover is a solvent that will remove paint and glue residue. It is effective in removing permanent marker stains but may also remove some of the wall paint. Apply a small amount of nail polish remover to a clean cloth and dab it over the permanent marker stain. Work from the edges of the stain toward the center until the stain is gone. Use as little nail polish remover as possible to prevent it from dripping down the wall and removing more paint.
- Dry-cleaning fluid will remove stains from permanent markers on your wall. Purchase dry-cleaning fluid from your grocery or home improvement store. Dab a little of the fluid on a clean cloth and blot the stain until it is gone. Work from the edges of the stain toward the center so that it doesn't bleed to spread. Rinse the area with water.
- Rubbing alcohol is a less toxic solution that may remove some permanent marker stains, especially if the stains are relatively new. Blot the rubbing alcohol on the stain on the wall until it is gone. Rinse the area completely with clear water and dry it.
- Toothpaste acts as a mild abrasive that will work to grind away stains. Couple this treatment with any other cleaning solution that was not able to remove all of the permanent marker stain. Work the toothpaste into the stain for several minutes. Let it dry for 10 minutes before wiping it up with a water-soaked cloth.
