- 1). Draw the famous flower you wish to paint using a pencil. Base the flower on the flowers you use for reference by drawing exactly what you see rather than what "seems right."
- 2). Fill your palette with appropriate colors of acrylic paint. Place a large dab of paint in each groove of the palette. If desired, mix two or more colors in a groove using a paintbrush.
- 3). Apply a layer of background paint to the canvas. Choose a color that contrasts well with the flower by selecting a color on the opposite side of the color wheel. For example, choose a yellow background for a purple flower. Apply paint using long, smooth strokes. Paint the entire canvas with the background color. The layer should be light enough that pencil shows through. Allow this paint to dry for about 10 minutes before adding more paint.
- 4). Dip your paintbrush in the base color of the flowers. Most roses would have a red or pink base while most sunflowers would have a brown base. Paint the base of the flower using the paintbrush.
- 5). Paint the flower's petals using one color. Allow this color to dry then add shadows and highlights to the petals. The highlights should consist of the petal color mixed with white while the shadows should consist of the petal color mixed with a small amount of black. Base these highlights and shadows on the flowers you use as reference.
- 6). Paint the stems and petals of the flowers. Add highlights and shadows to the stems and petals.
