Outdoor Play - Tips for Getting Children Off the Couch and Outside Again

Have you seen a difference in the time kids spend outdoors compared with when you were growing up? Most would probably say yes, and that is generally because of the modern day fascination with electronic games and gadgets. But it shouldn't have to be this way. If you have a child who is only interested in something that requires a power connection then here are a few tips for getting them to enjoy outdoor play again.

A good suggestion is to incorporate outdoor play time into your child's daily routine. Send them outside for minimum 30 minutes after school. Tell them that they can play with the PS2 or Xbox only after they have finished their outdoor play time. Providing you are consistent with this then your child should adapt quickly.

We all know that outdoor play on your own is not all that much fun. If your child doesn't have any brothers or sisters to play with then invite some friends over. You should always remember that Moms and Dads are great play partners too. You could consider it part of your daily fitness routine. You will get the combined benefit of improving your health and spending some quality time with your child. Teach them some of the games you played in your childhood. They will love you for it.

Encouraging children outdoors is often easier with some play equipment but it doesn't need to be expensive. A sand-pit for pre-schoolers works wonders and older children enjoy all kinds of ball games, bicycles, hopscotch and skipping ropes. If room is available then a trampoline, swing set or basketball ring are all compatible with hours of outdoor play. Don't forget games like hide-and-seek that need no equipment, just your child's imagination.

It is true that outdoor play is essential for a child's physical and mental development but in order to achieve this we may need to make some changes. Let us put the well-being of our children at the top of our priority list and get them enjoying the fresh air again.
