Cameron Diaz Talks About "In Her Shoes"

Cameron Diaz on the Appeal of ?In Her Shoes:? ??The whole content of the story and the fact that these people were brave enough to make that journey really appealed to me. I loved that all these women would be able to do that.
When we meet them, they?re at that breaking point and it could go either way. But the bond and the relationship between the sisters is so strong. ?Maggie didn?t sleep with Rose?s boyfriend or guy [because she liked him], she slept with him to get back at Rose.

But she also did it because one) she wanted to hurt her because she was mad at Rose. But she also was hoping that [because] Rose had just kicked her out, she was hoping by creating this chaos that Rose would have to clean it up and that would extend her stay. Because she would keep her engaged in the behavior that they had. But it backfired because this time that was the end. We meet them there so that journey from there on out was really [one] that they both take. ?To me, I thought it was really courageous and something that I?d like to portray for an audience.?

Cameron Diaz on the Audience for ?In Her Shoes:? ?I would love for everyone to see this film. I think it?s a film for everyone. I think it?s entertaining. It?s funny, it?s human. I think it?s a film for everyone, so sure, I?d love for as many people to see it as possible. I didn?t make it for one specific audience, definitely. I don't think any of us did.?

Cameron Diaz on Taking on the Role of 'Maggie': ?I don?t remember really being afraid of playing her.

I know that I looked at who she was and what angle it was that you come into something like that, a character like that. Oftentimes, in fact I think this is to my fault, I look at usually scripts as a whole. I should probably pay more attention to the character that I?m going to play and what they do. Oftentimes I?m impulsive about my decisions based on the content of the entire script.

I had a girlfriend who is an actor who just said she would do films because there was one scene she wanted to play. It was worth it to her to do the whole film, even though it was all s**t just so that she could have that one scene. For me, it?s like I look at the whole picture. That?s my impulsive move towards projects, towards material.

Cameron Diaz on Her Character?s Body Image: ?It was important to me to exploit that aspect of Maggie because that was really who she was. Her body was her tool. It was her instrument, it was how she got through the world the way that she had up until that point. For me it was important to be able to exploit that part of her.

We could have gone further, definitely could have gone further, and we didn?t. I could have actually been naked. I could have gone anywhere. I could have really worn skimpy stuff. I didn?t really think any of her, other than the cleavage and the bikini, I didn?t think that anything was really inappropriate. She wore jeans and it was winter and she was bundled up. And in Florida it was one little short skirt. But I didn?t feel like she was? Everything she had fit into a garbage bag. Everything she owned fit into a garbage bag. She didn?t have a lot of choices.?

Is ?In Her Shoes? Diaz?s Most Assured Performance?: ?This is a good moment, certainly. I think that life is constantly changing, the ebb and flow. You have your up days and you have your down days, and that?s what I love also about this film. It?s not just a comedy. The characters aren?t always handling every situation with humor. Sometimes they just crumble under it and that?s life. You go through every day and some things really affect you and you let them get to you and you can?t see the humor in it and you can?t get through it and you drop off that cliff. Then the next moment, you?re riding through life and you?re like, ?That is hilarious. Somebody just ran over my foot.? It?s an ebb and flow. I think that?s what is so comforting about this film is that it?s not just a film where you have to be at attention as to always being at a level of intensity over the drama of it, or always be looking for the laugh. It?s a movie that just moves you through it as if you?re being a part of these characters? lives.?
