How to Seal a Stained Wood Entry Door

    • 1). Open the door slightly. Place the awe or large nail at the bottom of each hinge and use the hammer to tap the head of the awe or large nail to push the hinge pins up and out of the hinge. Remove the door from the hinges after removing all hinge pins.

    • 2). Lay the door flat on sawhorses with towels between the sawhorse and door to prevent damaging the wood.

    • 3). Remove door hardware (such as door knobs, deadbolt assemblies and hinges) from the door. Place each set of hardware in a separate, sealable container or bag so the parts stay together.

    • 4). Use 100 grit sandpaper to sand the entire door. Sand all four edges, then the top. Flip the door over and sand the entire surface of the other side. Repeat with 120 grit sandpaper. Be careful not to touch the wood with bare hands or the sealant may not adhere properly because of the oils in your skin on the wood.

    • 5). Wipe the entire door down with a tack cloth to remove all sanding dust.

    • 6). Use the paintbrush to apply a coat of sealant to the top, bottom and hinge edges of the door. Seal only the edges, not the flat surface of the door. These areas are difficult, or impossible, to seal after the door is re-hung. Wipe off any sealant that spills or creates a ridge on the flat surface, front or back, of the door. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Sand these areas with 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe with a tack cloth and apply a second coat of sealant. Allow to dry overnight.

    • 7). Reattach the hinges to the door. Align the hinges on the door with the hinges on the door frame. Push the hinge pins back into the hinges. Use the hammer to gently push them all the way in if needed.

    • 8). Wipe the entire door down with the tack cloth and apply a thin coat of sealant to the inside, outside and remaining edge of the door. Do not apply a heavy coat or the sealant will run, sag or drip. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

    • 9). Sand the inside, outside and remaining edge of the door with 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe the entire door down with a tack cloth to remove all sanding dust. Apply a second coat of sealant. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Apply a third coat of sealant using the same method for the second coat.

Allow the door to dry for 48 hours before reattaching door hardware such as door knobs and deadbolt assemblies.
