How to Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in a Kia Spectra

    • 1). Test your air conditioning system for leaks. Your local auto parts store should have a leak detection kit. If you see any visible damage, take your Spectra to a professional to repair the leaks before you try to recharge the air conditioning system.

    • 2). Find the Low Pressure Side service port. This is usually centered in front of the engine. It has a black cap marked LOW. Remove the cap and set it aside. You will have to replace it later.

    • 3). Turn on the Kia and set the air conditioner to the coldest setting. You also need to have it blowing as hard as possible so the condenser kicks on. Check the air conditioning system pressure using an automotive air conditioner pressure gauge. You can find this at your local parts store. Follow the manufacturer's instructions because these differ depending on the kit.

    • 4). Attach the refill hose to the connector on the Low Pressure Side of the air conditioning system. The Low Pressure Side connector is smaller than the High Pressure Side connector, so the refill kit hose should fit only on the Low Pressure Side connector.

    • 5). Hold the can upright and open the valve on the refill hose. This lets the air conditioner suck the refrigerant out of the can. Emptying the can may take 10 minutes or more.

    • 6). Recheck the pressure. If it is still low, start adding another can of refrigerant. Keep checking the pressure frequently so the pressure stays within the normal range.

    • 7). Close the valve and remove the refill hose when the pressure is satisfactory. Replace the cap on the Low Pressure Side quick connect valve.
