- 1). Pick which assistive technology device that the student will benefit from. The device should be something that benefits the student in the greatest number of ways. For example, if the student needs help with mobility, you might pick a motorized wheelchair. This device should also give the student some independence from adults.
- 2). Teach the student and all adults who work with the student how to work the device. Even though the student will be the one working the device most of the time, it is important for everyone to understand how it works. The adults who work with student should know how the device works in case the student gets stuck or the device malfunctions. This way they are able to assist the student in using or fixing the device.
- 3). Decide what tasks the student will use the device for. If the student has a motorized wheelchair, the task he will use the device for is any movement or transition to another area. The wheelchair will not help the student solve math problems. After you decide what tasks the student will use the device for, explain the decision to both the student and the adults who work with him. This way everyone is clear what the device is being used for.
- 4). Watch how the student is able to use the assistive technology device. If he struggles with it, he may need some extra practice. If the device isn't helping the student do the tasks that are needed, you may need to consider another device or change the tasks that the device is assisting the student with.
