How to Remove Feelings of Guilt

    • 1). Ask yourself about the source of your guilt, and clearly identify from where it is coming. If you are guilty because you think you have offended someone, apologize to the person and let it go. Even if the person does not accept your apology, make a decision to move forward with your life. If you feel guilty because someone negatively judges you, consider the source. Ask yourself if that person is perfect. Allow yourself, and others, to be imperfect.

    • 2). Stop talking negatively about yourself. For example, stop reminding yourself about what you "should" do, or what you "should" have done. You are trying to live by the unrealistic standards that others have set for you. You should set your own standards and codes of behavior. Don't berate yourself with negative talk, as it will only perpetuate your guilty feelings. Instead, constantly remind yourself of all of your positive qualities.

    • 3). Insist that others accept you as you are. Become aware of the people in your life who try to make you feel guilty, and avoid them. You should be tolerant of others' feelings and beliefs, but not at the expense of your own. Stop worrying about what other people may think, and do what you think is right.

    • 4). Learn from your mistakes, but forget about the experiences. Don't dwell on bad decisions that led to negative consequences. Instead, focus on making better decisions in the future based on the wisdom you have gained. Constantly remind yourself of all that you have accomplished and how much you are growing as a person.

    • 5). Surround yourself with positive people who have high self-esteem. Associating yourself with positive people will make it easier for you to feel good about yourself.
