Studies have been carried out to prove if low testosterone can cause alzheimer's.
These studies were carried out on a variety of males, over the age of fifty.
It was found that males that had shown signs of having low levels of testosterone, for some reason had higher levels of beta amyloid protein in their blood.
Beta amyloid is secreted as the brain's neurons age.
It is believed that having too much of beta amyloid in your brain, leads to it tangling up with the nerve cells and strangles them bit by bit.
This is thought to increase the risks of a person developing the alzheimer's disease.
Research is now being carried out to see if by injecting testosterone to ageing men, might help to keep their levels of testosterone at a normal rate.
Also by mixing testostrerone with oestrogen supplements and giving it to postmenopausal women, might just help reduce their risks of devoloping alzheimer's.
This hopefully will stop a person making too much beta amyloid.
At the moment these tests are being carried out on mice.
The mice were first tested to make sure that they had low levels of testosterone in their blood.
They then gave the mice the testosterone injections on a daily basis, when the mice were tested again, it did show that there was a reduced accumulation of beta amyloid, and the testosterone levels were back to normal.
As yet scientists are sill no further forward in finding a cure for alzheimer's disease.
However it has been proven that there are more women than men who suffer with this disease.
This is because women tend to live longer than men.
Alzheimer's is a degenerating disease.
The disease slowly kills the nerve cells in the brain.
The symptoms of this disease are memory loss, poor judgement, slurred speech, confusion, and feeling anxious.
This will then get to the stage where it will take away the persons ability to live a normal lifestyle.
Near the end stages of alzheimer's disease a person will need constant care.
So can low testosterone cause alzheimer's? As yet this theory has not been scientifically proven.
But by doing further research into these studies and tests, it might just help people in the future who face this devastating disease to live a more active life.
Funding is always a problem, it costs thousands and thousands of pounds to keep doing this research.
If you find yourself in a position to donate some money, there are numerous charities you could donate to, which would be gratefully appreciated.
