- 1). View the back of the iTouch to find the storage space number. Only the third-generation offers 64 GB. If you have that much space, you have a third-generation. First- and second-generations offer 8 GB and 16 GB. In all three generations, 32 GB is offered.
- 2). View the model number on the back of the device. Second-generation devices are model number "A1288." Third-generations are model number "A1318."
- 3). View the top-left black antenna. First-generation iTouch models have a squared off internal corner. Second- and third-generation models have an oval shaped antenna.
- 4). Evaluate the thickness of the model. First-generation iPod Touch models are thicker, like the first-generation iPhone. First-generations are also heavier than the newer iTouch gadgets. Obviously, this only works if you have more than one generation of iTouch available to examine.
