Do you know that despite of the thousands of different types of hybrids and species of orchids, they can be separated in only two orchid types? An orchid can either be a terrestrial orchid, or an epiphyte orchid.
Knowing and learning about these two types can help you know what kind of orchid to choose, especially if you are just starting to learn how to cultivate orchids.
This can also help you understand how to take proper care of them.
Knowing how to take care of them will make it easier for you to grow orchid flowers.
If an orchid grows on the ground, it is a terrestrial orchid.
A good sign to know if it is a terrestrial orchid is to check the root.
Most terrestrial orchid types have roots hidden under the ground like most plants.
They get nourishment from the soil.
However, some orchids can be semi-terrestrial.
This means that the orchid can have roots hidden in the soil and exposed roots.
Cymbidium is a good example of terrestrial orchids.
There are over 40 cymbidium species and more than a thousand hybrids.
This is one of the very first types of orchids that have been cultivated.
It is a semi-terrestrial orchid, meaning it can also grow on rocks and trees.
Cymbidiums can grow well if placed in an environment full of rotten wood and dried leaves.
Cymbidiums can be found in their natural habitat all over Southeast Asia, Australia and Japan.
Cymbidiums are popular for beginners because they are easy to grow, and with proper care and nourishment, the plant can produce lots of flowers.
For orchids that have exposed roots, they are called epiphyte orchids.
They usually grow on tree branches or rocks, and unlike terrestrial orchids, they do not rely on the trees or rocks for nourishment.
As they cling onto branches or rocks, organic matter would start accumulating in between the roots of the orchid and the branch or rock.
This is where they get nourishment.
The roots are also surrounded with sponge-like material that soaks up on water whenever it rains, and gradually releases it to plant tissues to ensure a steady supply of water even if it's not raining.
Orchids that hang from rocks and branches also get nourishment from the air and filtered light.
Dendrobiums are one of the most popular epiphytic orchid types.
However, it is a bit more difficult to take care of, compared to Cymbidium orchids.
It is best to put it in a warm, humid area.
You have to keep it moist all the time, or else, it will be difficult for the plant to grow flowers.
Dendrobiums grow in natural tropical habitats particularly in Australia, Southeast Asia, Northern India and Polynesia.
If you want an epiphytic orchid that is easy to grow, choose Phalaenopsis orchids.
The flowers last really long and they come in different colors, mostly pink and yellow.
There are striped ones, too.
They are colorful and thus, popular in weddings and other occasions.
