The region is one of contrasts, and combines stunning beaches and a calm coastline in the south with wilder more active surfing beaches in the north.

The National Park of Dartmoor is another big attraction of the county, and if you are family that likes walking there is no shortage of options here. Whether it is walking inland on the rolling moorland paths or bracing yourself against the wind on the coastal trails, you can choose to explore on your own with the help of the well-marked maps or elect for a guide to organise your day for you. For an animal centre that focuses more on the local animal species, head to the Miniature Pony Centre on Dartmoor. These cute ponies are the stars of the show here, although there are plenty of ducks to feed and a horse parade to watch too. If children fancy it they can even take a pony ride through the beautiful parkland.

Another local inhabitant is the sheep, and The Big Sheep at Abbotsham is the place to go if you want to learn more about this underestimated animal. Regardless of whether it is raining or a hot sunny day the activities here carry on regardless. Sheep racing and shearing make a great spectacle for young ones, and the duck and dog trials are fantastic fun too.

All children love railways and the Devon Railway Centre makes for a fun day out for all the family. The miniature model railways are fascinating and the under tens can even drive their own train. There is also crazy golf on offer here. If golf is something the whole family enjoy then take a trip to the Pirates Bay Adventure Golf in Paignton. Here, the eighteen-hole adventure course provides hours of fun for everyone.

Boat trips to Lundy Island are a popular holiday day out for families and depending on the time of year, you can take a guided walk too. Wildlife walks run from August to April, while if you are in the county between May and July you can join a seabird guided walk. Snorkeling safaris make a really exciting option if you are in the region between June and September.
