Christmas is celebrated worldwide as one of the most popular winter holidays. Though the basic premise is the same, each country celebrates Christmas a bit differently. China has adopted many American and European Christmas traditions, but still exchanges certain Chinese-specific kinds of gifts and plays specific games. Not all Chinese celebrate Christmas in China. However, for those who do, many Chinese-Americans celebrate Christmas as a family gathering and for religious reasons.

    Lucky Money

    • In China, traditional Christmas gifts often have roots in the New Year celebrations. Lucky money is one such gift. This fake paper money is usually tucked into red envelopes and given to party hosts, friends and family. The money is usually printed on red or gold paper. It symbolizes good fortune and prosperity in the New Year.

    Tangerines and Oranges

    • Like lucky money, the tradition of giving and displaying the fragrant citrus fruits, tangerines and oranges, has its roots in New Year celebrations. Their round shape and golden-orange color make them symbols of Chinese coins. Ripe fruits mean good wishes to the recipient. Displaying them in your home is said to bring about prosperity in your home.

    Red Decorations

    • Red is an auspicious color in China. It symbolizes health, prosperity, good fortune and luck. Since Christmas colors are already red and green, this makes Christmas the perfect time to exchange lucky decorations with loved ones. The gifts may range from simple red Christmas lights to red Chinese lanterns for display among pine boughs. You also may gift loved ones with red Chinese firecrackers.
