How to Make a Folder Insert for a Journal

    • 1). Fold a piece of cardstock into thirds so that the width and length of the folded paper are slightly shorter than the width and length of the journal's back cover.

    • 2). Place the folded paper against the back cover of the journal with the open edge facing the spine. Close and open the journal to ensure a good fit. Leave the folded paper in place while you make the cloth hinges.

    • 3). Cut two 2-inch wide rectangles of linen. The lengths should be equal to the top and bottom edges of the folded cardstock. If you don't have linen, you can use cardstock or another thin cloth instead.

    • 4). Fold each piece of linen in half lengthwise. Fold a 1/2-inch of linen up on both ends of each cloth, toward the center fold. The pieces should now each resemble the letter W. This essentially means that each piece is made up of four segments.

    • 5). Take one of the linen pieces and hold it horizontally across the bottom of the journal with the point facing up. Place the first segment between the back cover of the journal and the back of the cardstock. The first fold should be flush with the cardstock's edge. Glue the segment to the back of the cardstock.

    • 6). Take the other the linen W and hold it horizontally across the top of the journal with the point facing down. Place the first segment between the back cover of the journal and the back of the cardstock. Make sure that the first fold is flush with the cardstock's edge. Glue the segment to the back of the cardstock.

    • 7). Glue the back of the cardstock to the back of the journal. Place a book or other weight on top while it dries.

    • 8). Slide the last segment of each linen W between the top two folded pieces of cardstock and glue in place. You now have a folder with hinges that allows the folder to expand as you add things.

    • 9). Slide a piece of paper inside the folder so excess glue won't cause the folder to glue shut. Weigh the folder down with a book or similar object as you wait for the hinges to dry. Once dry, the folder is ready to use.
