The Best Way to Clean Linoleum Floors

    Weekly Cleaning

    • If you mop your linoleum floors once per week, and take care to keep dirt to a minimum (by taking shoes off at the door), your cleaning routine will be fairly simple. Start by sweeping or vacuuming up any dust and debris from the floor. Mix an all-purpose cleaning product, like Mr. Clean or Pine Sol, with the amount of water stated on the manufacturer's instructions. Use a sponge mop or string mop to wash the floor. Rinse the mop head and go over the clean floor with plain water to be sure that all of the cleaning product is rinsed off. Use clean towels or rags to dry the floor.

    More Frequent Cleaning

    • If you have small children or pets you may feel the need to clean your linoleum floor more frequently than once per week. This is fine, but it's important to take steps to not strip your floor of its no-wax finish. This is accomplished by forgoing the use of cleaning products and opting for some simple dish soap instead.

Vacuum or sweep the floor first. Fill a bucket with hot water and just a few drops of mild dish soap like Ivory or Dove. Use a sponge or string mop to scrub the linoleum. Dump the water and rinse the bucket and mop. Fill the bucket with clean water and repeat the process to remove any leftover soap. Dry the floor with towels or rags.

    Heavy-Duty Cleaning

    • If your linoleum has missed a few cleanings and is particularly soiled, you may need to strip the no-wax finish and apply a fresh coat of wax after cleaning the floor.

Start by sweeping or vacuuming the linoleum floor. Fill a bucket with hot water and add dish soap or an all-purpose cleaner. Use a soft scrub brush to clean the floor in 3-by-3 foot sections by hand. Empty the bucket and rinse it thoroughly after the entire floor has been cleaned. Fill the bucket with clean, hot water and ammonia and scrub the floor once again with a mop. Rinse the bucket yet again, as well as the mop, and rinse the floor. Dry it thoroughly with towels or clean rags.

Apply liquid floor wax with a clean cloth or rag per the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to spread the wax evenly. Allow at least a half hour of drying time before applying a second coat of wax. Do not wash or damp mop the floor for 24 hours after waxing.
