Pumpkins planted in late May are harvested by Halloween. Dedicate lots of space in the garden for planting, although pumpkins do not require cultivated ground to spread out. Warmth, full sunlight and low humidity are necessary for the vegetable to thrive and they don't do well on wet, poorly aerated soil. Pumpkin roots grow deep and should be watered deeply and infrequently, except for several weeks in late July and early August when more water is needed while they bloom. - Vining pumpkins use a great deal of garden space. In order to grow well, vining pumpkins need at least 50 to 100 square feet per hill, with rows spaced 10 to 15 feet apart. The proper depth to plant pumpkin seeds is 1 inch deep. Four to five seeds are planted in each hill.
- Semi-bush pumpkins are planted 1 inch deep with four to five seeds per hill and are thinned to the best two plants in each hill. Semi-bush pumpkins are planted in hills that are spaced 4 feet apart with 8 feet between each row.
- Like other pumpkins, miniature pumpkin seeds are planted 1 inch deep. Two or three seeds at a time are planted every 2 feet along the row. The rows are spaced 6 to 8 feet apart.
- Bush varieties of pumpkin seeds are planted 1 inch deep along each foot of the row. Plant one to two seeds at a time and allow 4 to 6 feet between rows.
