It's very important to know a lot of useful words.
How to learn them? Here are three ideas.

Read something Read something written in Spanish and highlight the words that you don't understand.
Before you look them up in a dictionary, try to guess their meaning.
You should learn how to learn a new language without using your native language! 2.
Watch a movie Find a good Spanish movie (you can search for some titles on IMDB) with subtitles, watch it and note down some interesting phrases or words.
Dialogues from movies are usually a great source of very useful words, phrases and idioms.

Create situations in your head Create situations in your head to find out what words and phrases you need in typical situations.
For example, let's assume that you are a bodybuilder.
Some native Spanish speakers ask you why you are a bodybuilder and how they can become bodybuilders too.
What would you say? What words and phrases do you need? Note them down and learn them! Okay, and how to learn these new words? Just use a virtual flashcard software such as Anki (it's for free).
Don't struggle with wordlists, they aren't very effective.
