Remove all old shingles and tar paper. Check to make sure that the drip-edge, which is the bent metal that protects the edges of the roof, is not damaged. - 2). Roll out the tar paper and staple it securely to the plywood sheeting until the roof is covered with a layer of tar paper.
- 3). Turn the first row of shingles upside down and overhang the drip-edge by a 1/4- to 1/2-inch and go up the sides of the house in the same manner. Nail down each shingle with four nails on the tar strip of the shingle.
- 4). Cut off the tab or edge of the first shingle that you placed in the new row. Continue laying shingles and nailing each row into place. Trim the edges of the shingles along the sides of the house.
- 5). Cut holes into the shingles, using a utility knife, where the roof vents will be placed. Install vents where the row above it will cover the base. All the shingles should be to the top of the house and overhanging each other on both sides. Place the ridge cap shingles on the ridge of the roof and nail on both sides of the shingle.
