How to Wind a Pickup

    • 1). Tape the pickup bobbin to the flywheel of the sewing machine. The flywheel is the part of the sewing machine that turns. The bobbin needs to be centered on the flywheel for it to rotate properly.

    • 2). Tape the end of the pickup wire to the bottom plate of the bobbin.

    • 3). Wrap the wire around the bobbin five times. You should wrap it in a coil around the magnets, like a spool of thread or a coil of wire. The wire should be tight on the magnets.

    • 4). Lightly grasp the wire a few inches from the sewing machine. Your grasp should be tight enough that you can manipulate the wire, but still able to move freely through your fingers.

    • 5). Press the foot pedal on the sewing machine to start it. Start as slowly as possible. You can increase the speed once you have a comfortable rhythm. The wire begins to wind automatically once the sewing machine starts.

    • 6). Guide the wire onto the pickup as necessary. You need to make sure the wire consistently wraps at the same tension. You also need to ensure the wire wraps in an even coil around the bobbin.

    • 7). Wrap the wire 8,000 turns or more times around the bobbin. More turns of wire increases the output of the pickup.
