The Best Soil for Pole Beans

    Consistency

    • Pole beans prefer well-draining, loose soil. Beans won't be able to stand properly in soil that cakes or crusts.

    PH Levels

    • Pole beans prefer soils between 5.5 to 6.5 on the pH scale, but grow best in soil with a pH between 5.8 and 6.0 pH.

    Spacing

    • Ohio State University suggests planting the seeds 1 inch deep in heavy soil, or 1 1/2 inches deep in sandier soils. If using a trellis, space the pole bean seeds 6 to 10 inches apart, or several beans to each pole. Space rows between 3 to 4 feet apart to allow for adequate growth.

    Tips

    • North Carolina State University suggests rotating crops in the soil every three years to discourage soil-borne illnesses.
