How to Remove Iron in Swimming Pools

    • 1). Use a pool water testing kit to see how high the iron content of the water is. Anything above 0.2 parts per million, or ppm, is considered too high.

    • 2). Add extra water to your pool until its water level is approximately 2 to 3 inches higher than usual. The brownish or greenish tinge of the water should just begin to change; this means that the water's pH level is rising.

    • 3). Add chlorine directly to the pool's skimmer box. The extra chlorine will combine with the iron in the water, forming a substance called ferris chloride. Your pool filter should be able to remove the majority of the ferris chloride that is formed, effectively eliminating excess iron in your pool water.
