Hearken back to a time of elegance and beauty by decorating your home in the Victorian style. The inspiration during the Victorian era was the furniture pattern of the Elizabethans, classical Greek and traditional Georgian. Starting out only as an option for the wealthy, during the Industrial revolution middle class families could also partake of this particular design choice. Transform your home to this stylish age by selecting traditional Victorian color schemes, furniture styles and ornamentation.

    Furniture

    • Select furniture in deep wooden finishes. Victorian furniture such as chairs, tables and sofas feature carved legs, so add furniture with these attributes to your home. Accent the furniture with throw pillows with feminine detailing such as lace, beads and ribbon trim. Look for embroidered fabrics, especially in velvet. Choose some key marble pieces that complement the wood finish of the other furniture.

    Drapery

    • Treat the windows with brocade or velvet drapery, and tie back with a braided ribbon. If heavy drapes are too bulky, select a lighter fabric such as silk, lace or madras. Feel free to select embroidered designs with leafing effects or floral accents.

    Wall Decor

    • Add floral-patterned wallpaper to your home in shades of red, blue and green. Integrate cream-colored crown moldings that balance out the color of the chosen wallpaper scheme. If you choose not to add wallpaper, you can select paint in one of the common colors of the era, such as deep green, burgundy, purple or red. Since texture plays an important role in Victorian design, use a paint finishing technique such as spattering or sponging.

    Embellishments

    • Continue to decorate the room by hanging paintings with a wooden or gold-colored frame. Favorite paintings of the Victorian age were of people such as children, family members or maidens. Place doilies on the tables and add candle holders or crystal lamps on top for added effect.

    Flooring

    • Select either hardwood floors or carpet for your Victorian home. If you choose to carpet the area, select either the Wilton or Brussels historical type. The Wilton style is a cut pile and is the option used by more affluent Victorian households, whereas the Brussels loop-pile type, serves as a cheaper option. Accentuate the floor space with area rugs. Oriental rugs serve as a favored choice and help complete the look.
