We're always glad to write something that can inform and entertain you all at the same time dear reader but often times there are articles we wish we didn't have to write. Unfortunately, this is one of those times where we have no choice and therefore have to put together stuff that's all too serious for our tastes but as our duty to inform you dictates we're going to see our commitment through.
Outdoor electrical products safety is an important thing to be aware of because it seems to be that every year something related to this atrocity tends to go down.
The reasons for these preventable tragedies usually occur because of a botched installation or incorrect use of electrically based devices. The reason for this happening many times is because of lack of knowledge or bad advice from the manufacturer of the accessories in question.
To make sure that you don't fall into one of those categories we want to do our best to inform you of what you can do to avoid such hardship when using electrical products outdoors.
* Be weary of a product that's no longer in use or abandoned. Something like this is probably trash for a reason and the disastrous results of trying to extend its life could come back and cause you a lot of trouble.
* Proper consolation of the manual is imperative if you don't do this then you're in a world of trouble. Reading the manual will tell you the best way to care for your product and use it. Be aware that using outdoor electrical products inside and vice versa can bring about further hazards.
* Make sure that your electrical product is free of any danger from indoor and outdoor water areas. The best way to do this is by covering them. The use of a ground fault interrupter will help neutralize any current that goes through the equipment. The GFCI is a big help and will prevent any major electrical/fatal shock.
* When replacing these products only replace with certified models or get a repair job done by a certified electrician.
* Never use an electric cord with equipment where the power ratio is improperly balanced. An overload can occur and lead to outbursts or power failures.
* You must also be aware of humid areas and water. That would include swimming pools, sinks, tubs.
* Products that warn you to avoid direct UV rays and require that you use them only indoors say that for a reason. Make sure you are properly protecting those items and following their guidelines.
* Prior to doing any outdoor work with your product. Make sure you know of any and all power lines if doing any unearthing in your backyard. Also make sure to detect all overhead power lines. This can be trouble if you're cutting down tress or painting your house. It's best to consult your electric company about this one prior to making any moves.
* For repairing products read documentation properly and follow guidelines on safety equipment use especially.
* For any equipment that's left unattended or opened talk to the electric company.
* Anything gasoline related such as pipes and lines must be well protected. Something like a link could cause a fire or explosion.
* Make sure to never cross a major or minor circuit and never remove prongs. Make sure if any of your plugs are damaged in this fashion then dispose of them and get it fixed.
