How to Calculate the Size of the Cord for a 1200w Steam Iron

    • 1). Convert watts to amps using the formula Amps = Watts / Volts. For your 1200 watt steam iron, that equates to Amps = 1200 / 120. This equals 10 amps.

    • 2). Measure how long an extension cord you will need. The cord needs to be under 100 feet in length for proper operation of the tool.

    • 3). Find your correct extension cord size. Using the chart in resources, notice your steam iron is right in the middle between two different amp categories. For best results, use the higher category. If your extension cord is 50 feet or under, you can use a 14 gauge extension cord. However, if your extension cord is 100 feet, you will need to use a 12 gauge cord.
