- Early spring is recommended for planting and transplanting perennials and for planting roses. Plant these garden staples from March until May.
- Begin annual planting by setting out cool-season plants, like pansies or snapdragons, in April. Wait until late May when frost danger passes to set out warm-weather annuals, like nasturtium or zinnia.
- Summer-blooming bulbs like dahlia should be planted in May or June in New York. Wait until after the last frost date has passed to set these out. Lily bulbs and most spring-flowering should be planted in September, although gardeners should hold off on tulip bulb planting until October.
