In this technologically evolved world we live in it is sometimes easy to forget the beautiful, vibrant elements that exist naturally. Nowhere is this more true than in a survey of the world's most colorful fruits and vegetables, whose hues not only brighten up our cuisine, but whose natural pigments have sometimes been used to make dyes for products and articles of clothing. - The African cucumber has bright yellow skin with horn-like protrusions, and on the inside it boasts translucent green flesh and off-white seeds. The taste of the pulp has been compared to a combination of cucumber, lime, passion fruit and banana. It is native to the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa and is also known as melano or horned melon, among other names.
- The red Chinese toon is a plant that produces shoots and leaves that are edible when young. These leaves and shoots are aromatic and are also used medicinally in its native China.
- With red spines and leathery red skin on the outside, the light pink, translucent or white-colored flesh of the rambutan has been described as sweet, though mildly acidic, and juicy. It is similar in appearance to the lychee and is native to Southeast Asia, including the Malay Archipelago.
- Though the exterior is dull green (and features spikes, the flesh of the jackfruit, also called the jak, is bright yellow. It has a firm texture, tastes mildly of pineapple and has nutritious seeds. Jackfruit is native to southwestern India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Bangladesh, where it comes from the Artocarpus heterophyllus.
- Also known as the noodle bean, the asparagus bean is a green string-less bean that grows to be about a foot long. Its taste is reminiscent of a combination of beans, mushrooms and asparagus.
- The football-shaped dragon fruit typically features pinkish red skin that sometimes includes large scale-looking sections with green tips, and its interior boasts white flesh and black seeds. Its flesh is creamy and delicately flavored. Native to Mexico, South America and Central America, dragon fruit can also be found in a variety of other colors.
- The Jell-O plant (scientifically named Tiliacora triandra) is a vine grown for its leaves, which when crushed produce a green gel that is eaten as a syrup. This plant is native to Southeast Asia.
- The mangosteen has a hard red-brown rind and white pulp that is sweet-tasting and juicy. It derives from the Garcinia mangostana tree and is native to Southeast Asia.
