- You will get blisters and calluses if you walk on a treadmill with sneakers that are too wide or too narrow. The fit side-to-side should be snug (not tight). The toe box needs to be high enough to fit your toes comfortably or you can develop bunions. Wiggle your toes when buying sneakers to make sure there is enough room. The space between the end of your longest toe and the sneaker should be equivalent to the width of a finger. Also, make sure the arch feels comfortable, as flexible arches distribute your weight evenly as you walk on the treadmill.
- Cushioned, comfortable sneakers will encourage you to jump on the treadmill more often.man exercising on treadmill 6 image by Ken Hurst from Fotolia.com
Sneakers should have cushion in the toe and heel sections. The heavy impact of walking on a treadmill can strain your feet, so the cushioing will prevent soreness. There is a difference between proper cushioning and a squishy insole. Cushion provides the right amount of support and isn't too soft. Your feet won't hurt the day after a workout, and you will be more inclined to stick to your walking program. - Proper traction will keep your feet from slipping side to side on the moving treadmill. Walking sneakers have technology built in to provide control and traction. Preserve the soles of the sneakers by wearing a different pair outside. Save your walking sneakers for the treadmill alone so you know the traction isn't compromised.

Buying a pair of treadmill sneakers is an investment. As of January 2011, shoes will cost you anywhere from about $50 to $300. The price depends on the type of shoe, quality and name brand. The most expensive come with the newest technology and the top brand names. The less expensive sneakers are from lesser-known makers and might have fewer of the features you want. If you're a serious treadmill walker or tend to have muscles aches and other health problems, it might be a good idea to opt for the highest quality shoe. The midrange is probably suitable for most other treadmill walkers.
