- 1). Purchase an OBDII code reader at your local auto supply. The cheapest reader will cost about $25.
- 2). Look directly below your steering column and above your pedels. Locate a semi-rectangular, roughly 2-inch-long electrical port. This is the OBDII connection point.
- 3). Plug in the OBDII diagnostic tool into the port.
- 4). Turn the key to one position before start, typically called the "ON" position. All of the normal diagnostic lights should illuminate in this key position.
- 5). Follow the instructions on your OBDII reader. Typically it will have a "READ" and "ERASE" button. To acquire the trouble engine codes, press the "READ" button.
