- 1). Gather elk antlers to piece together the chandelier. Hunt for antlers that have been shed by male elk in late winter or early spring. Purchase antlers from an online retailer if you do not live near elk habitat. Select antlers to use that reflect the shape and size of the fixture you plan to build.
- 2). Clean the antlers thoroughly with oil soap and a heavy rag or sponge. Inspect and clean the inside of the antlers to remove debris and ensure that there are no cracks or damage that may jeopardize the structural integrity of the chandelier.
- 3). Give the antlers a layer of protection by applying a clear stain coating. Allow the drying process to take place in a well ventilated area.
- 4). Purchase a chandelier lighting kit that comes with the number of lights the finished fixture will have. Hardware stores and various online retailers sell kits that contain all of the wiring, lights and mounting fixtures required to safely wire the chandelier.
- 1). Arrange the antlers to reflect the desired shape of the chandelier and temporarily hold them in place with an easy-to-remove tape. Remember that the shape also needs to be suitable for use with the light-wiring kit. Permanently secure antlers together at their bases using heavy-duty wire, screws, epoxy glue or any combination thereof.
- 2). Drill holes at the tip, and in the sides of the antlers, where you will eventually place the lights. Run the wiring included in the light kit according to the instructions. Place wiring through the hollow centers of the antlers and secure the lights at the locations of the drilled holes.
- 3). Secure mounting brackets to the chandelier and location where the fixture will be hung. Use chain to securely connect the chandelier to the ceiling brackets.
