How to Change Expresso Cabinets to Cream White

    • 1). Move furniture out of the room, and remove appliances and canisters from the counters. Tape off any areas you do not want painted, such as moldings, light switches and power outlets. Spread plastic drop cloths over the floor, and tape the drop cloths along the bottom of the wall.

    • 2). Open the cabinet doors, and unscrew the hinges from the face of the cabinet with a small screwdriver. Remove the hinges and pulls from the door, and place the hardware in a small bucket

    • 3). Apply a coat of primer to the cabinets with a brush or roller, and prime the front of each cabinet door. Paint one side of the door and lay it down primer-side up on the drop cloths to dry. Allow the front of the door to dry for a minimum of 6 hours.

    • 4). Turn the cabinet door over and prime the other side, allowing the primer to dry for 24 hours. If the espresso paint is still visible, apply another coat of primer.

    • 5). Pry the lid from the can of cream white paint, and stir with a paint stick to thoroughly mix the paint. Pour the paint into a paint pan, and stir once again to evenly distribute the color.

    • 6). Paint the front of each door with the brush, taking care to apply an even coat of paint around any decorative carvings or embellishments. Dip the brush in the fresh paint as often as necessary to prevent streaks or brush marks on the doors. Lean the back of the door up against the face of the cabinet, and leave it to dry overnight.

    • 7). Flip the doors over and apply a coat of paint to the back side of each door using the roller. The back of each door should be smooth, and painting with a roller will go much quicker than using a brush. Rest the front of the doors against the cabinet and leave them to dry for 24 hours.

    • 8). Coat a roller in a thin layer of paint, and roll it over the body of the cabinets. Apply steady, downward pressure as you roll to cover the cabinet in an even layer of paint. Use the brush to paint around the corners and along the junction of the wall and cabinet to avoid painting the wall.

    • 9). Allow the cabinets to dry for a minimum of 48 hours. Replace the hinges and hardware on the doors, and reattach the freshly-painted cream white doors to the cabinets.
