How to Test a Computer Fan

    • 1). Shut down your computer and unplug it.

    • 2). Remove the screws at the back of the case and slide off the side panel.

    • 3). Unplug the power lead from the fan in question. Unplug the power lead from a fan that you know to be functional. Swap the two leads so that the potentially broken fan is using a lead that was going to a working fan.

    • 4). Plug your computer in and start it with the case open. Keep your fingers clear and look for the fan in question to function. If the fan functions the power lead was bad. If it continues to fail then the fan itself is bad.
