- According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects of Catapres that are considered common but not serious include constipation, limited sexual ability, decreased appetite, nausea and itching or burning of the eyes. These symptoms are not considered life threatening, nor do they normally require medical treatment. - Serious side effects of Catapres include dry mouth, extreme fatigue, accelerated heart rate, fever, paleness, a cold sensation in the extremities, insomnia, nightmares and weight gain. A patient experiencing these symptoms should consult with a physician before continuing Catapres doses.
- Severe side effects associated with Catapres that require immediate emergency medical attention include difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face or the extremities, shaking, hallucinations, decrease in urination, skin rash, hives and dilated neck veins.
- Before using Catapres, a patient should advise her physician of existing medical conditions such as heart disease, abnormal heart rhythm, kidney disease, recent stroke, irritated skin, systemic lupus or clinical depression. According to PDRHealth, the effects of Catapres on a fetus are unknown, and thus caution should be taken before prescribing the medication to women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Catapres is present in breast milk, therefore women who are breastfeeding should discuss possible risks with their physicians.
- PDRHealth cites that Catapres has the potential to adversely interact with other medications, including beta blockers, calcium-channel blockers, tricyclic antidepressants and sedatives. The effects of Catapres can be altered or diminished if alcohol is consumed during its use.
