How to Smooth Out Concrete Cracks

    • 1). Cut a V-shaped channel into the concrete crack, using the grinder equipped with a masonry grinding wheel. Cut the groove at least 1/2 inch wide at the top and a bit wider at the bottom so that the filler material will be better-seated in the original concrete.

    • 2). Blow or vacuum all the dust and debris out of the crack. Rinse with a hose. Blow out the crack again to make sure everything inside is clean.

    • 3). Mix the epoxy-based concrete adhesive according to the label directions. Brush the adhesive into the crack with the 2-inch paintbrush, making sure to coat the sides and bottom of the crack. Allow the adhesive to dry until it's tacky.

    • 4). Mix the filler compound while the adhesive is drying. Time the mixing process so the adhesive is tacky when the patch repair compound is ready to go. It will have the consistency of concrete mix.

    • 5). Press the filler into crack with the putty knife. Pat the filler into the crack with the wooden float; the filler will look moist on top. Let the filler set until it gets firm.

    • 6). Pat down the filler with the float until the material looks moist again. Go over the filler with the trowel in swirling motions to work up a wet slime on top of the crack. Trowel this smooth, feathering the edges into the surrounding concrete.

    • 7). Allow the repair to almost dry to the touch. You still should be able to leave a mark in the surface with the edge of the putty knife.

    • 8). Brush a stiff-bristle garage broom across the top of the repair. Run the bush straight across the concrete from one side to the other. It should leave light brush marks in the still-damp concrete filler to match the broom finish of most concrete applications. Skip the broom if the surrounding concrete has a trowel finish; try to match the look of the finish by working the repaired area with a flat trowel.
