- 1). Respond that you would like to receive the Social Security prepaid debit card when you are first granted Social Security benefits. One of the questions on the form Social Security beneficiaries fill out asks how they would like to receive their monthly payments. They can receive mailed checks, direct deposits into personal bank accounts or on the Social Security prepaid debit card. Choose the debit card option, provide your mailing address, phone number and birth date, and the Social Security Administration will make sure the card is sent to you.
- 2). Call the Social Security prepaid debit card hotline at 866-675-5648 to enroll for the card. Press 1 to enroll with the Direct Express Card program. Next, press 1 if you would like to speak to a representative who speaks English, 2 for Spanish or 3 for all other languages. Then press 1 again to enroll in the debit card program. You are then transferred to a representative. Give her your Social Security number, name, birth date and other security information to identify you and your Social Security account. The representative will then sign you up for the card and have it sent to you in the mail.
- 3). Sign up to receive the Social Security prepaid debit card online. Once on the Social Security Administration website, click on the box that says, "Sign up for the Direct Express Card." Click the box that states that you wish to enroll as a recipient and click "Continue." Next, check the box stating that you wish to receive your Social Security benefits on the card, then provide information about yourself like your name, address, phone number, Social Security number, date of birth and email address. Click "Continue." You will then be signed up to receive the card, and it will be mailed to you.
