Problems With Setting Up a Comcast DVR

    DVR

    • A DVR is a digital video recorder that allows you to record and replay television programming. There is a set storage capacity depending on the cable box you own, and you can set the box to record at a later date and time. It functions much like you would expect an old VCR to work. However, the DVR unit is much more complex, loaded with additional features and more accurate in its recording. It captures video digitally, and the digital reproduction is of a much higher quality then previous recording devices.

    Retrieving Your User Manual

    • Depending on your service type, you could have any number of Comcast boxes produced by professional vendors. The first troubleshooting step is to determine what Comcast box you own. More than likely, if it is a DVR, it is produced by Motorola. Comcast lists seven Motorola DVR boxes on its website. Each has an image associated with it. Pick the one that looks like your box and click on it to retrieve the user manual.

    Power Issues

    • Some issues are specific to the device, but there are simple troubleshooting steps you can go through if the installation is not successful the first time around. A common issue is that the DVR will not power on. Verify that the AC adapter is attached to the DVR unit and that you have the power supply plugged in. Also check that there is a power source generated from the outlet, all switches are turned on and the DVR itself is switched on. Use the power button on the device rather than the remote control. If the DVR is powered on and you receive a cable signal, but the remote isn't working, make sure the remote is switched to "Cable" mode. Also, check that the remote batteries are fresh and delivering an appropriate power source.

    Audio and Video Issues

    • If your DVR is delivering an image to your television but no audio, make sure the "Mute" option is not selected on the box or remote. If it is, unselect it. Make sure that the connections are appropriately attached and in the appropriate ports, if your television has multiple audio ports. If you have audio, but no video, again check that the connections are appropriately attached. In addition, make sure your television is set to the appropriate channel or input source. Verify that you are trying to view a channel you are subscribed to. If you aren't, a picture will not display.
