Although you will find holiday decorations in the stores much sooner, generally the time to take out the twinkling icicle lights and reindeer is the weekend after Thanksgiving. Additional holiday decorations consist of colorful lights strewn about the trees and bushes in the front yard, large illuminated snow globes and Santa Claus. Candles in the windows and Nativity scenes are common features during the holidays. Holly wreaths decorated with red bows and bells adorn front porches and doors giving the front yard a real holiday feeling. Christmas tree-lined sidewalks with lights and outdoor ornaments greet neighbors as they pass by your home. - The winter holiday season begins at the end of December, but many people begin decorating a few weeks before. Various cultures celebrate during the holiday season, although not for the same reasons. The holiday season takes place during the month of December until just after New Year's.

Some winter decorations are acceptable to keep outside until the end of the season. You can include such items as greenery around your door frame or porch, minus the red bows and ornaments or colorful red or burgundy winter wreathes on the front door. A basket or old-fashioned dairy container filled with branches and with tiny white lights wrapped around them makes a warm, inviting touch to your porch. Moreover, flowerpots filled with winter flowers such as pussy willows or artificial or real holly branches with red berries are lovely winter decorations. - Although you may have winter decorations put up outside before this date, according to the "The Old Farmer's Almanac," the winter season begins on Dec. 21 or 22 and lasts until the first day of spring, which arrives on March 20. You can put away nonholiday winter decorations just after the first of the year and put away winter decorations, at the very latest, by the first day of spring. You may opt for earlier if your climate turns warmer earlier and spring fever begins to set in.
