Tutorial for the Smart Sharpen Filter in Photoshop

    • 1). Open Adobe Photoshop and choose the photo or image to be edited.

    • 2). Click on "Filter" in PhotoShop CS2. Then click "Sharpen" and "Smart Sharpen" to open the Smart Sharpen window.

    • 3). Save your current settings in the Smart Sharpen window so you can go back to your original image if you need to later.

    • 4). Choose the desired option from each of the dropdown menus. In the "Amount" dropdown menu, choose the degree of sharpening you wish. The greater the number, the sharper your image will be. "Radius" determines the distance around the sharpened edges that will be affected. The greater the radius, the more noticeable the sharpening will be.

    • 5). Choose a "Remove" option from the three available: lens blur, motion blur and gaussian blur. Lens blur is for images that are blurry all over and are fuzzier than gaussian blurs. To fix this, Photoshop will find edges in the photo and make the image sharper all over. Motion blur occurs when the object in the photo moves while the picture is being taken. To fix this, choose the angle of motion. A gaussian blur looks like an image taken with an out-of-focus camera, producing an all-over blurry image. To fix this, Photoshop will perform a consistent sharpening across the entire image.

    • 6). Click on "Advanced" mode if you do not want your photo sharpened on a large scale but rather want small sections of the photo sharpened. The Advanced menu has three options: sharpen, shadow and highlight.

    • 7). Choose your fade amount in the shadows and highlights tabs. The greater the fade, the more you decrease the sharpness of either the shadows or highlights in your image. The only way to do this accurately is trial and error. Increase and decrease the fade gradually to find the desired degree of sharpness. At the same time, increase and decrease the tonal width, which determines if the lighter or darker areas of the image get sharpened. The greater the tonal width, the greater the range of light and dark shadows that will be sharpened. Also in this step, choose a radius, which determines the size of the areas that are considered shadows or highlights.

    • 8). Adjust these settings until you have an you like. Save the finished photo to set the changes you have made.
