It is one thing to think that nothing ever changes, but it is quite another to actually believe that knowledge doesn't grow in leaps and bounds.
For far too many people, being stuck in the past not only deludes them to believe they are secure in their current beliefs and attitudes, but also totally prevents them from enjoying life, as it can be.
Most aspects of life constantly change whether we believe it or not.
Staying within the cocoon of current thoughts brings a multitude of undesirable consequences on to us with no control.
The consequences are changes required in your work environment that demand you alter practices that are needed by your employer in order to compete and stay afloat.
These consequences mean that each day you go to work, you fall farther and farther behind what is needed, and put yourself in continuous disharmony with your boss.
In the past, I've seen some otherwise very capable and intelligent people erode their own self-worthiness and force others, through their unwillingness to alter or change, to shun them.
These people, while gifted in a multitude of ways, could not seem to make the necessary steps to move beyond their self-imposed comfort zone.
These comfort zones seemed to provide them with a false sense of security in as much as the zone precluded any expansion or additional skills.
Why is it then that these people are unable to move forward? In the majority of cases, it is not that they are not capable or talented.
It is not that they have some kind of learning challenge.
The real fact is that in most situations they are afraid.
Yes, afraid that they can't make it because they have struggled to get to the point in their life that was difficult.
Now that they are at this point, they erroneously assume that they have to go no further, that they have to take no more risks, or to place themselves in the open where they may be pushed hard to make the grade.
One of the methods that seems to work for some, not all though, is to give the impression that you are bringing them into your confidence; that you are willing to do whatever it takes to help them move forward, to learn new skills, to learn new ways to cope with change.
And, one of the biggest factors I found that made a real difference was to sit with them one on one and explain the rationale for the changes that are needed and required.
The matter is simple yet complex for many.
You have to keep learning no matter where you are in your life or at what point you think you have reached that leads you to conclude that you don't have to try any more because you know enough.
Learning is continuous because change rests for no one.
