Tips to Stop Smoking

    • 1). Realize that cigarette smoke is toxic to you and those around you and that it can lead to premature death and serious health problems. Knowing and believing this should help you follow through on your decision to stop smoking.

    • 2). Use a distraction. When you get the urge to light up a cigarette, do something else instead. Read an interesting book if you enjoy reading, or work on your hobby if you have one. If you don’t have a hobby, it would be a good idea to get one. You can also turn away from that cigarette and pop a piece of chewing gum or a healthy snack into your mouth. If you’re in the company of friends or acquaintances, engage them in a conversation to help you forget about your urge to smoke.

    • 3). Watch one, or all, of the videos on the smokefree.gov website. When you actually see the ways in which smoking can affect your health, you won’t hesitate to put that cigarette down.

    • 4). Talk to your doctor about trying one of the various nicotine replacement therapies available to assist you in weaning yourself off nicotine. Ask your doctor about prescription medications that lessen the symptoms that come with the cessation of smoking.
