- 1). Cut a section of ribbon to run the length of the barrette's underside. Fit it snugly between the prongs that stick out on either end. Measure and cut a second section of ribbon that is slightly longer than the flat top of the barrette, so that it can be folded over the edges on either side. Use a seam sealant like Fray Check to seal the ends of both pieces of ribbon.
- 2). Place a bead of glue on the underside of the barrette, at the end where the flat top juts out past the clipping mechanism. Press one end of your longer ribbon section down and hold firmly. Apply a drop of glue on the top of the barrette on the same side and fold the ribbon around the edge. Press down and secure with an alligator clip to hold the ribbon in place while it sets.
- 3). Draw a line of glue along the length of the barrette. Place the ribbon on top of the glue so that it is secured along the flat top of the barrette. Place another bead of glue on the underside of the remaining end; fold the ribbon around the edge. Press down firmly and secure with your second alligator clip.
- 4). Remove the center spring piece from the clipping mechanism and set it to the side. Run a line of glue down the underside of the barrette; press the remaining ribbon section along this line (into place between the two prongs). Apply pressure and hold firmly for about 40 seconds.
- 5). Wait at least 30 minutes for the glue to set. When you are sure the barrette is completely dry, remove the alligator clips and replace the center spring piece. Your French barrette is lined and ready to wear.
